01 What you are agreeing to

Using XCrap means accepting the terms on this page. If you do not accept them, do not use the service. There is nothing to cancel and no account to delete, because there are no accounts.

02 What the service is

XCrap reads publicly visible pages from X and returns their contents as Markdown, JSON, YAML, CSV or HTML. It is free, requires no key, and is provided by volunteers on a best-effort basis.

It reads public accounts only: their posts, their profiles, the replies under their posts, and the lists of who follows them and whom they follow. It does not access protected accounts, direct messages, or anything behind a personal login, and it never will.

03 No warranty

In plain terms: it may go down, it may return the wrong thing, and it may disappear entirely without notice. It is free, it depends on a platform actively trying to prevent it working, and one person maintains it. Do not build anything you cannot afford to lose on top of it, and do not treat what it returns as verified fact without checking.

04 What you are responsible for

That includes, depending on where you are and what you are building:

• Data protection law, if you store or process personal data from posts.
• Copyright, since posts and their attached media belong to the people who made them.
• X's own terms, if you separately hold an account with them.
• Whatever rules apply to your field, employer or funder.

05 What you must not use it for

You may not use XCrap to:

• Harass, stalk, dox or target any individual.
• Build a surveillance product aimed at a specific person or group.
• Break the law where you are, or where the person you are reading about is.
• Circumvent the rate limits, whether by rotating addresses or otherwise.
• Resell access to this service as though it were your own.
• Attack the service, or the platforms behind it.

We block addresses that do these things. We do not owe you a warning or an explanation first.

06 Rate limits and fair use

Limits are applied per endpoint and per IP address, and every response tells you where you stand in the x-ratelimit headers. They exist because one server pays for all of this.

Deliberately working around them — rotating addresses, distributing requests to look like separate users — is a breach of these terms, not a clever optimisation. If you genuinely need more than the limits allow, the official API is the thing that sells it; XCrap is not distributed and there is no larger tier here to buy.

07 Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, the operators of XCrap are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential damages, or for any loss of profits, revenue, data or goodwill, arising from your use of or inability to use the service.

Since the service is free, no fee has been paid, and total liability is therefore nil.

Nothing here excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded, including for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.

08 Relationship to X Corp

XCrap is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by or connected to X Corp in any way. "X" and "Twitter" are their trademarks and are used here only to describe what this service reads.

We take the position that reading publicly accessible web pages is not unauthorised access to a computer system, consistent with the reasoning in hiQ Labs v. LinkedIn. We accept that doing so is inconsistent with X's terms of service. That is a contractual question between X and us, and it is not a criminal matter and not your problem.

09 Takedown and opt-out

If you are on X and do not want your posts readable through XCrap, email [email protected] and your handle is blocked, usually the same day. The privacy policy sets out how this works.

Rights holders with a copyright complaint should write to the same address with the specific URL and the basis of the claim. Cached copies expire in five days regardless.

10 Changes and termination

These terms may change. The date at the top says when they last did. Continuing to use the service after a change means accepting it.

We may suspend or end the service at any time, for any reason or none. Realistically, the reason will be money or a lawyer.

11 Governing law

These terms are governed by French law. Where consumer protection rules in your country of residence give you stronger rights, those rules still apply to you.
